The Affair MOVIE Trailer Drama ($) Rent/Buy
Boss Level MOVIE Trailer Action/Thriller Hulu
Joe Carnahan directs Frank Grillo, Mel Gibson, and Naomi Watts in the latest action-movie take on the Groundhog Day time-loop formula, one that finds a formal special forces agent (Grillo) forced to repeatedly play out the day he is killed, a bit like a real-life videogame. The film was originally intended to reach theaters in 2019, so the delay isn't entirely due to the pandemic.
City of Ghosts NEW Animation/Family Netflix
Coming 2 America MOVIE TrailerTrailer2 Comedy Prime Video
Eddie Murphy returns for a belated sequel to his 1988 hit comedy Coming to America. Originally slated for a nationwide theatrical release this month (Amazon may still release it in some theaters, though nothing has been confirmed), the film was purchased by Amazon from Paramount in October for a reported $125 million (though that figure did include free shipping). Arsenio Hall, John Amos, Shari Headley, and James Earl Jones return from the first film—joined by new-to-the-series Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, and Leslie Jones— while the director this time is Craig Brewer, who previously teamed with Murphy on Dolemite Is My Name.
Crisis MOVIE Drama ($) Rent
Writer-director Nicholas Jarecki's first film since Arbitrage back in 2012 is sort of a present-day take on Soderbergh's Traffic, telling three connected stories related to America's opioid crisis. Robin Wright directs and stars in this story of a woman’s attempt to deal with grief by retreating to an isolated cabin in the Rockies. Wright’s feature debut as director (after helming episodes of House of Cards) also stars Demián Bichir, and the two lead performances were the highlight of an otherwise unspectacular film according to critics following Land's Sundance premiere a few weeks ago.
Lost Course MOVIE Trailer Foreign/Documentary ($) Virtual theaters

Releasing both in theaters and on Disney+ (for an additional rental fee) today, Disney's delayed 59th animated feature is based on an original story (the studio's first such film since Moana). It's a fantasy tale set in ancient Asia in which a lone warrior (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) teams up with the world's sole surviving dragon (Awkwafina) to fend off an invasion by a group of monsters known as the Druun.
  Sentinelle MOVIE Trailer Foreign/Action/Thriller Netflix

Stray MOVIE Trailer Foreign/Documentary ($) Rent/Buy
An unofficial companion to the popular 2017 documentary Kedi (which focused on Turkey's street cats), Stray follows the stray dog population in Istanbul. If you need more motivation, note that at least one of the film's subjects is a puppy. (And note that Turkey has a blanket no-kill policy for its stray animals.) The film, which received strong reviews following a virtual Tribeca screening last spring, also plays in theaters beginning today.

Zack Snyder's Justice League MOVIE Trailer Action/Sci-fi HBO Max
Now back to being a movie (rather than a once-mooted miniseries), this HBO Max exclusive is a four-hour director's cut of the 2017 DC Comics feature film Justice League, which, as you may recall, was not all that successful either creatively or commercially—though Snyder had to step away from the film for personal reasons during post-production, leaving Joss Whedon to complete the film. Whedon controversially imprinted his own touch on Justice League, including by writing new scenes not in the original script, but now after a lengthy fan campaign Snyder finally gets his do-over. Even though the Snyder cut is twice as long as the original, only a few minutes of new footage were filmed—though that was apparently enough to add Jared Leto's Joker (as well as a surprise "hero cameo") to the film.

  Alien TV Animation/Family Netflix
Calls NEW Trailer Anthology/Drama Apple TV+
We're not exactly sure why this is a television series rather than a podcast, but Apple's latest original could be TV's first audio-only series (albeit with very minimal, abstract visuals). Each of the nine 12-minute episodes takes the form of a phone conversation. Calls is adapted from a French series and features the voices of Nick Jonas, Lily Collins, Pedro Pascal, Nicholas Braun, Rosario Dawson, Danny Pudi, Aubrey Plaza, Ben Schwartz, Riley Keough, Karen Gillan, and more.

Delayed (by the pandemic) from its original August launch window, the latest TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe finds Anthony Mackie (as Sam Wilson/Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier) reprising their film roles. Daniel Bruhl, Emily VanCamp, and Wyatt Russell also star in the Malcolm Spellman-guided (Empire) series, which picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame and cost a reported $150 million to make. There are just six episodes (streaming one per week), and for now it looks like it'll be a miniseries rather than an ongoing show, though that could change.

The Nevers NEW Trailer Sci-fi/Drama HBO tbd
The first series created by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2013, The Nevers is an original story that follows a group of women in late Victorian-era England with unusual abilities who find themselves in a position to change the world. Whedon was deeply involved with the series as writer and director while serving as showrunner for the first time since Dollhouse over a decade ago, but he stepped away from the project midway through production last fall (likely, though unofficially, due to the surfacing of harassment charges against Whedon on prior productions) and was replaced by Philippa Goslett, a British screenwriter. Pandemic-related production delays also mean that just six episodes will air in the coming weeks, with the back half of season 1 (at least four more episodes) to follow at a much later date, likely in 2022. Laura Donnelly, Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Nick Frost, and Ben Chaplin star.

Philly D.A. MINISERIES Documentary PBS tbd
After three decades as an outspoken civil rights attorney in Philadelphia, Larry Krasner launched an underdog campaign for district attorney in 2017—and won, pledging to reform a system that had resulted in one of the highest incarceration rates in the country. Could he actually change the system from the inside? That's what PBS's docuseries aims to find out. Note that the series will not air until November in Philadelphia itself so as not to influence the upcoming election in which Krasner is running for reelection.
Sasquatch MINISERIES Documentary Hulu
The 4/20 release date is no coincidence. Produced by the Duplass brothers, this three-episode true-crime (or truish-something) series follows journalist David Holthouse as he revisits an incident from his own past. It seems that in 1993, while visiting a Northern California pot farm (you know, for research), he heard a tale about three local men who were dismembered in a "savage Bigfoot attack." Could it have been true?

Instead, the film was sold off to Amazon, making it a Prime Video exclusive. Jordan (and previously portrayed by Liev Schreiber and Willem Dafoe). Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) directs from a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples.

This year's Star Wars Day brings a new Star Wars series to Disney's streaming service, and this time, it's animated. Streaming on HBO Max the same day as it is released in theaters, Dead is the first film in four years from screenwriter-turned-director Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Hell or High Water). Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Jon Bernthal, and Tyler Perry head the cast for the modern-day thriller with western elements set in the Montana wilderness, where a teenage murder witness attempts to evade two pursuers with the aid of a survival expert.
The Underground Railroad MINISERIES Trailer Drama Prime Video
In development since 2017, Amazon's 10-episode adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer-winning novel of the same name comes from Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), who directs every episode. Like the book, the series depicts an alternate history of America's 19th century South, where an escape route for slaves features a literal—rather than merely metaphorical—subterranean railroad. South African actress Thuso Mbedu, a newcomer to American audiences, plays the lead role of Cora, while Chase W. Dillon, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Pierre, Lily Rabe, and The Good Place's William Jackson Harper also star.
The Woman in the Window MOVIE Trailer Drama/Thriller Netflix
Joe Wright directs Amy Adams in a Tracy Letts-scripted adaptation of A.J. Finn's novel, itself sort of (but unofficially) a variation of the Rear Window formula. Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star. 20th Century Studios originally intended to release the film in theaters a few years ago, but it was delayed first by poor test screenings (it was subsequently re-edited) and then by the pandemic, and Netflix stepped in to secure the film's rights.

With Disney+ becoming the new TV home for Marvel, Hulu canceled most of the Marvel projects it had in the pipeline (or already on the air). But a pair of animated series remain at the streaming service, and up first is M.O.D.O.K., short for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, a large-headed, mid-tier supervillain facing difficulties in his professional and personal life voiced by Patton Oswalt. Oswalt is also a producer and co-creator of the series along with former Community writer Jordan Blum, so expect a comedic approach to the material—esepcially since the voice cast also features a number of comedic actors including Ben Schwartz, Sam Richardson, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Melissa Fumero, Beck Bennet, and Jon Daly.

  Loki NEW Clip Drama/Comedy Disney+
It's been a few months since the last one, so it must be time for a new Marvel series. Tom Hiddleston brings his big-screen God of Mischief to Disney+ in a series that finds Loki popping up at key moments throughout human history, where he becomes an unlikely influencer on events. Expect a comedic approach, especially since the series comes from frequent Dan Harmon collaborator Michael Waldron, who has written for Rick and Morty and Community, and director Kate Herron, who is new to Marvel and has worked on shows such as Netflix's Sex Education. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Owen Wilson, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Sophia Di Martino also star. Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green—as well as (W)NBA stars Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Diana Taurasi, Chris Paul, and Damian Lillard, among others—also star. Co-written by Ryan Coogler and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip), the film begins a one-month run on HBO Max today concurrent with its theatrical release.

Disney's series adaptation of the 1989 feature film (not exactly one of Tom Hanks's better movies) stars Josh Peck as (human) U.S. Marshal Scott Turner—the son of Hanks' police detective character—and a handful of canine actors as Hooch, his dog partner.
