Cowboy Bebop NEW Trailer Drama/Sci-fi Netflix
Delayed a year not (necessarily) due to the pandemic but because of an on-set injury to its star, Netflix's live-action series adaptation of Cowboy Bebop finally makes its 10-episode debut. The original Cowboy Bebop was a Japanese-produced, jazz-inspired anime series from the late 1990s that later earned an American fanbase through airings on Adult Swim. This remake similarly attempts to blend science fiction and noir tropes as it depicts the adventures of a group of bounty hunters operating throughout the solar system. Some of those bounty hunters are played by John Cho (as Spike Spiegel), Mustafa Shakir (as Jet Black), and Daniella Pineda (as Faye Valentine), while Alex Hassell plays Vicious, part of the evil Syndicate. Yes, that jazzy soundtrack will return: Yoko Kanno, who scored the anime series, is back to put the bebop in the new series as well.

Created by Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho and his collaborator, illustrator Choi Kyu-seok, Hellbound is a live-action adaptation of the pair's digital comic The Hell (also released in print in English by Dark Horse as The Hellbound). The Korean horror series is set in a world where angels suddenly appear on earth to warn sinners that they are condemned to suffer a violent death.

King Richard MOVIE Trailer Drama/Sports HBO Max
The latest Warner Bros. theatrical release to head to HBO Max on day one is theoretically a biopic about tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams. But, as you may have guessed from the title, the focus of the film is actually on their father/coach Richard Williams, played by Will Smith, since that is apparently more marketable. Still, the Williams sisters are producers on the film, and a November release date suggests that WB has some hope of positioning Richard for awards. Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and Dylan McDermott also star for director Reinaldo Marcus Green (Joe Bell).

tick, tick...BOOM! MOVIE Trailer Drama/Musical Netflix
Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with this musical biography of Rent composer Jonathan Larson, adapted from Larson's own stage musical of the same name. Andrew Garfield stars as Larson, joined in the cast by Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp, Judith Light, Bradley Whitford, Robin de Jesus, and Joshua Henry. The film, which features a screenplay by Dear Even Hansen Tony winner Steven Levenson, will also open in theaters on November 12.
The Wheel of Time NEW Trailer Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
In its quest for its own Game of Thrones, Amazon isn't putting all of its (dragon) eggs in one basket. In addition to next year's Lord of the Rings series, another epic fantasy novel adaptation is headed to Prime Video this fall. Amazon has already committed to at least two seasons of The Wheel of Time, which adapts the best-selling book series by Robert Jordan (and, after his death, Brandon Sanderson) that spans 14 individual novels plus a prequel. There have been several prior attempts to bring the books to both TV and the big screen, but the massive scope of the series made those projects ultimately untenable. Amazon's version stars Rosamund Pike and comes from former Survivor contestant (and writer on Agents of SHIELD and Chuck) Rafe Judkins and like the books is set in a world where magic exists but only a select group of women are allowed to use it. (If you are keeping score at home, that makes two shows this year created by Survivor contestants—and the other one was pretty great.) The first three episodes stream today, followed by five additional weekly installments on Fridays. Season 2 has already begun filming (albeit with a different actor, Donal Finn rather than Barney Harris, playing Mat Cauthon), and Judkins has a total of eight seasons planned out if Amazon agrees to move forward.

The Beach MINISERIES Trailer Reality A24
Repeating on a continuous loop for the entire week at the A24 Screening Room (where a $6 ticket allows you to jump in and out whenever you want), Australian director Warwick Thornton's experimental, six-part slow-TV miniseries (or "sensory viewing experience") finds the director taking a break from civilization for two months by living alone on an isolated beach. The beautifully filmed result is one part adventure series and one part cooking show, and could serve as the perfect antidote to crowded Thanksgiving family gatherings this week.

This HBO Max-exclusive family holiday movie is set in 1980s Chicago, where a 10-year-old boy hopes to get the ultimate Christmas gift: a Nintendo. Michael Dowse (Goon) directs the adaptation of Kevin Jakubowski's book with a cast that includes June Diane Raphael, Neil Patrick Harris, and Steve Zahn (plus Winslow Fegley as the young protagonist).

Halle Berry makes her directorial debut and stars as a disgraced MMA fighter battling for both a career revival and custody of her son. Netflix picked up the film last fall for a reported $20 million when it debuted as a work-in-progress (hence no early reviews) at TIFF and will give it an awards push by also opening Bruised in theaters beginning November 17.

Hawkeye NEW Trailer Drama Disney+
What if ... Disney+ went several months without a new live-action Marvel series? No need to think about such a dire scenario any longer; the next one is here. Hawkeye finds Jeremy Renner reprising the title role (which he has played in half a dozen Marvel films) of Clint Barton. But he's not the only one: Joining the MCU is Hailee Steinfeld as a young fan who trains with Barton to become the next Hawkeye. The series comes from Jonathan Igla, who is new to the MCU but has written and produced for shows ranging from Mad Men to Bridgerton, and the cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Linda Cardellini, and newcomer Alaqua Cox, whose character (Maya Lopez/Echo) is being considered for a spinoff. Two episodes stream today, followed by single episodes on each of the following four Wednesdays.
The Humans MOVIE Trailer Drama/Horror Showtime 8p
The rare film to get a simultaneous theatrical and Showtime release, The Humans is also the rare holiday movie to center on Thanksgiving rather than Christmas, though heartwarming, it's not. Playwright Stephen Karam makes his film directorial debut with an adaptation of his own Tony-winning one-act play (which was also a Pulitzer finalist) about three generations of a family that gather for Thanksgiving at a run-down Manhattan apartment. The dialogue-heavy film takes a dark turn as the day progresses—so much so that in some places The Humans is listed as a horror film. (But it's not entirely grim; some places also list it as a comedy.) Even when they couldn't pinpoint its genre, many critics enthusiastically praised Humans when it debuted at TIFF in September. Jayne Houdyshell reprises her Tony-winning role from the play and is joined in the film by the excellent cast of Richard Jenkins, Steven Yeun, June Squibb, Beanie Feldstein, and Amy Schumer.

True Story MINISERIES Trailer Drama Netflix
It may star Kevin Hart as a comedian, but True Story is neither a comedy nor a true story. The seven-episode dramatic miniseries finds Hart playing "Kid," whose tour stop in his hometown of Philadelphia turns into a matter of life and death after an eventful evening on the town with his older brother (Wesley Snipes). The series comes from Narcos (and Narcos: Mexico) showrunner Eric Newman and also stars Tawny Newsome, Paul Adelstein, Will Catlett, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Billy Zane.

The Beatles: Get Back MINISERIES Sneak peek Trailer Documentary/Music Disney+
Director Peter Jackson's highly anticipated Beatles documentary, originally expected to debut in theaters over the summer, is now a Disney+ miniseries. Unlike other recent theatrical-to-streaming moves, this one wasn't triggered by fears over audience sizes but rather a wealth of material—so much that the one-time feature film is now a three-part, six-hour event. (Jackson can't resist a trilogy.) Borrowing techniques he used for his WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, the Lord of the Rings director has spent the better part of the past three years editing and restoring footage from over 60 hours of film shot by Michael Lindsay-Hogg during 1969 as the Beatles wrote and rehearsed 14 new songs that would eventually end up on the band's final albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be. (Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 film Let It Be also used a much smaller portion of the same footage.) A highlight of Jackson's miniseries is sure to be the Beatles' legendary final concert performed from the rooftop of their London headquarters, which will be shown in its entirety for the first time in history, but the expanded footage also allows the director to show how relations between the four band members at the time were not as acrimonious as widely believed. Only the first part of the series streams today; parts two and three will follow on Friday and Saturday.

Super Crooks NEW Trailer Anime Netflix
This 13-episode animated adaptation of the graphic novel by Mark Millar and Leinil Yu precedes a live-action take on the story that's also in the works at Netflix (though it won't debut until 2022 at the earliest). Because the original story spanned just four issues—not quite enough material to turn into a full TV series—the anime version features lots of new content written by Millar specifically for the show.

Cats and dogs dress up in elaborate human costumes and sing covers of pop songs in Fox's latest reality competition ... is what we unfortunately cannot write, because it isn't true. Though the original Hot Zone miniseries was based on a single book (and a real-life incident), Nat Geo has turned it into an ongoing anthology series that will no longer have any connection to Richard Preston's best-seller. Instead, this second season is set amidst the mail-based anthrax attacks in the United States in the months following 9/11, and recounts the FBI's search for the suspect responsible. Tony Goldwyn, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Hamlin (playing anchorman Tom Brokaw), and Dylan Baker star in the six-hour series, which will air across three consecutive nights (with each episode also streaming the following day on Hulu).

Listening to Kenny G MOVIE Documentary/Music HBO 8p
Out of all of HBO's "Music Box" documentaries, you may think this is the one you'll want to skip. But you are wrong. The receipient of excellent reviews out of TIFF in September, Penny Lane's highly entertaining documentary knows that that the smooth jazz saxophonist (who participates in the film) is hated by as many (or more) music fans than those who adore him and buy his records by the millions. And her painstakingly researched, often humorous film doesn't just trace his life story but focuses a good chunk of time on the backlash while exploring the meaning of "good" and "bad" music through interviews with music critics, DJs, and scholars.

Also opening in a few theaters in LA and NY today, the latest from director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Elle) was one of the most talked-about films at this year's Cannes, partially due to its quality (critics liked it but didn't love it) but mostly due to the fact that it's an often graphic film about a 17th century nun plagued by erotic visions who begins a steamy (and sacrilegious) affair with another nun. Delayed both by COVID and a change in directors (from Alexander Payne to Will Sharpe) after first being announced in 2019, this four-episode crime drama is based on the true story of a seemingly ordinary British married couple, Susan Edwards (played by Olivia Colman) and Christopher Edwards (David Thewlis) who become the focus of a murder investigation when two bodies are discovered in their backyard. And they aren't the bodies of two strangers, but the decade-old corpses of Susan's parents. Series writer Ed Sinclair spent hours interviewing the real-life couple, who maintain their innocence, and other participants to create the darkly comedic, perspective-shifting series, while Sharpe (who previously collaborated with Colman in the Channel 4 series Flowers) takes a highly stylized approach to the visuals. Episodes will air weekly (and stream on HBO Max) on Mondays.

Station Eleven MINISERIES Trailer Drama HBO Max
Too soon? That is the big question facing this HBO Max adaptation of the award-winning 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel that depicts a world ravaged by a pandemic—in this case, an extremely deadly flu. The 10-episode limited series was commissoned nearly six months before the all-too-real COVID pandemic began to make headlines, and whether or not audiences are ready to treat a viral contagion as entertainment remains to be seen (though Station Eleven's far more apocalyptic scenario may make COVID seem tame and manageable by comparison). Spanning multiple timelines (but mostly focusing on the aftermath), the series comes from Patrick Somerville (Made for Love) and counts Hiro Murai (Atlanta), Helen Shaver (Vikings), and Jeremy Podeswa (Game of Thrones) among its directors. The ensemble cast includes Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, David Wilmot, Matilda Lawler, Philippine Velge, Daniel Zovatto, Lori Petty, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Gael Garcìa Bernal.

Also returning from the film is Gunn himself, who is writing the entire series and directing multiple episodes (including tonight's opener), as well as Steve Agee, who returns to play John Economos, and Jennifer Holland (once again playing Emilia Harcourt). New cast members include Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Chukwudi Iwuji, Freddie Stroma, and Chris Conrad, while directors aside from Gunn include Jody Hill, Brad Anderson, and Rosemary Rodriguez. HBO Max is billing the series as an action-adventure-comedy that will reveal the origins of Cena's character.

The Tragedy of Macbeth MOVIE Trailer Drama Apple TV+
Working without his brother Ethan for the first time, Joel Coen directs a noir-ish, black-and-white take on Shakespeare's Macbeth starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as an older-than-normal Lord and Lady Macbeth. (The age change is intended to give the characters greater urgency in their actions, and the altered title of the film is also intended to reflect this new take.) Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram, Brendan Gleeson, and Harry Melling also star. The film, which received excellent reviews out of its NY Film Festival debut in September, will also receive a limited theatrical run (mainly to qualify for awards) beginning on Christmas Day.

untitled but insanely expensive Lord of the Rings series NEW Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
What will likely be the most expensive TV series of all time—with a budget reportedly twice that for the entire LOTR film trilogy, though it does come with free two-day shipping—finally makes its debut after years of production. Filmed in New Zealand like Peter Jackson's movies, the series is not directly adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's books but instead depicts a brand new story set in the same world (but taking place in the "Second Age," several millennia prior to the events of The Hobbit.) J.A. Bayona directs the first two episodes, while the remaining S1 episodes come from Wayne Che Yip and Charlotte Brandstrom. Those episodes will stream weekly rather than all at once, and a second season has already been ordered.
